- The Northampton Zoning Board of Appeals last night unanimously approved a special permit for a miniature golf course at 324 King St. The board granted the special permit to James and Phillip Greco for a nine-hole miniature golf course, along with conditions to protect abutters from light glare and noise.
- A report released today by the state Department of Education finds that Smith’s Vocational High School discriminates against women in the areas of recruitment, course selection and opportunities for training. The report lists eight steps to be taken to bring Smith’s School in line with Chapter 622, the state’s anti-discrimination law. They include revising the school catalogue, integrating all academic classes, including all courses in the freshman “exploratory” year, and changing recruitment and admission criteria.

- Bruce Gordon, director of the U.S. Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Leeds for the last five years and chair of the Easthampton School Committee, has been temporarily reassigned to the VA Medical Center in Connecticut. Gordon is expected to return to his post in Northampton in about six months when a new director is named for the Connecticut facility.
- Area motorcyclists were haling the action of the Northampton Ordinance Committee Tuesday night after it gave the thumbs-up to a proposed city law that would allow an unlimited number of motorcycles to park in each space everywhere. The proposal is modeled after a state law.

- In response to “hateful” language online in recent months, Amherst school leaders are calling for compassion. Carol Ross, who works in the superintendent’s office as the media and climate communications specialist, is urging the community to turn from “ridicule and belligerence to encouragement and benevolence.”
- Rainbow flags fluttered in the breeze Sunday evening as over 70 LGBT community members and their allies stood in solidarity outside of Northampton City Hall in response to the Orlando nightclub shooting. The shooting killed 50 people and injured many others early Sunday morning at Pulse, a gay nightclub.
