Thank you for the June 22 update on how Northampton’s CAPA department (Climate Action & Project Administration) is saving us money and planning for the future (“Northampton’s green infrastructure agency saves $296K, sets sights on carbon neutrality”).
I think the final lines of the article bear repeating. CAPA director Ben Weil is quoted as saying, “We’re technologically at a place where we never were before, where actually we have all the tools we need to win and be prepared for the climate that we’re just going to face and mitigate the worst of it,” he said. “We’re in this great position, no matter what the Trump administration does, they can’t stop it.”
While our federal government has dropped the ball, we’ve got local leaders forging ahead. And not just Weil: the Northampton Youth Commission is trying to raise funds for several worthwhile projects, including an outreach initiative around the NHS geothermal project. Lawmakers on Beacon Hill also have been hard at work. On July 1, the Senate was scheduled to vote on MA Senate Energy Bill S. 3143 “An act to save people money, repair the climate and grow the economy.” (For details, see the Mass Power Forward Action Guide to the Senate Energy Omnibus Bill.) We need this bill to help us transition off fossil fuels and rein in utility company profits. Please call or email your state senator to ask for their support.
