Northampton, MA – Carol Joyce Gotwals passed away peacefully on June 22, 2026.
Carol, the eldest daughter of Gordon and Ethel Joyce, was born on February 21, 1929, and grew up in Melrose, Massachusetts. She graduated from Melrose High School and attended Smith College in Northampton, MA, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 1950. Following a year of teaching at Holland Hall in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Carol returned to Smith College to continue her musical education, earning her Master’s degree in 1954. It was there that Carol met and married Vernon Gotwals, the college organist and an instructor of music. Carol and Vernon raised a family and shared a robust musical life together until Vernon’s passing in 2002.
Carol passionately loved her family, music, and the outdoors. She and Vernon raised their three sons in Northampton, MA, before moving permanently to Oceanville in Stonington, ME, in 1984. Carol’s grandfather, Frank Joyce, was born in Oceanville, and Carol returned there to spend summers with her parents, grandparents, and extended family. Together, Carol and Vernon built a creative and supportive household-not only for their three sons and their families, but also for many other young people in the neighborhood and members of the Smith College community. In Carol’s Northampton household, there was always room for another person at the dinner table or in the house for the holidays. Their home in Oceanville remained open to everyone, regularly playing host to guests, dinner parties, and musical events where all were welcome.
An accomplished pianist, talented singer, and dynamic choral director, Carol left an indelible mark on her musical communities. She directed the freshman choirs at Smith College and, during the 1960s and 1970s, developed the Hampshire Choral Society-a regional chorale based in Northampton-into an acclaimed ensemble that toured Romania (before the fall of the Iron Curtain) and England. In Maine, Carol directed the choir and Vernon played the organ at the Deer Isle Sunset Congregational Church for many years. Carol also taught countless piano and voice students. While she was a thorough and musically adept director, her unique talent was to get anyone to sing, effortlessly creating a joyful sound out of whatever musical ability stood in front of her.
Carol loved the woods, fields, and waters of Oceanville, and made it her personal mission to introduce them to everyone who visited. She loved walking through the woods pointing out various trees and plants, picking berries, and growing vegetables and flowers. From June through September, Carol swam as often as she could in her beloved cove, Puddin’ Bag. To Carol, indoors was meant for music, meals, and sleeping; the rest of her time was meant to be spent outside.
Carol was predeceased by her parents, her two siblings, Arnold Joyce and Elsa Straton, and her brother-in-law Carter Straton. She leaves behind a rich legacy of love and family, including: her three sons and their spouses: Frank and Donna Gotwals, Thomas and Molly Gotwals, and Philip and Lynn Gotwals; her five grandchildren and their spouses: Chasity and Todd Cash, Jason and Haley McDonald, Hannah Gotwals and Nick Sohn, Sarah Gotwals and Josh Wiener, and Caroline Gotwals; her four great-grandchildren: Emersyn Cash, Addie McDonald, Jill McDonald, and Kennedy McDonald; her sister-in-law Diane Joyce.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Deer Isle Sunset Congregational Church (UCCE Homepage – Deer Isle, Maine).
A memorial service celebrating Carol’s life will be held later this summer.
