In response to Autumn Gaffney’s letter regarding the letters in support of Karen Bercovici’s July 9 column: It’s important not to confuse criticism of policy for hatred of people.

Equally, it is important to engage with the arguments of those with whom you disagree rather then attack their character and motives. Assuming that minds can’t be changed, or that common ground can’t be found, often perpetuates the kinds of othering and demonization that trans rights activists decry as the root of transphobia.
