The UMass women’s soccer team scored twice in the first half and hung on late to take down St. John’s, 2-1, in its season opener on Thursday in Queens, N.Y.
The Minutewomen peppered the Red Storm net in the opening frame, finishing with 12 shots (eight on goal) with goals from Caroline Dickerson and Annie McCaffrey.
Dickerson deposited the first goal during the eighth minute, while McCaffrey doubled UMass’ lead shortly after, scoring in the 12th minute.
St. John’s made it a one-goal game early in the second half off a strike from Nora Basile during the 66th minute.
Minutewomen keeper Leah Nisenfield didn’t allow another goal before the final whistle, concluding the match with two saves.
These two teams met last season in Amherst, with UMass squeaking out a 1-0 victory.
UMass (1-0) will play its home opener next with a showdown against NJIT at Rudd Field on Thursday, Aug. 20.
Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
