Leeds, MA – Kathleen Morrissey, 82, passed away peacefully at home, leaving behind a lifetime of love, service, laughter, and devotion to her family and community.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary (Ahearn) Berniche; her beloved son, Jeffrey; and her sister, Joanne Bixby.
She is survived by her sons: Paul and his partner, Joe Doescher; James and his wife, Rana; Andrew; and her daughter, Cristina Smith and her husband, Michael. She was the beloved Grammy to her precious grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Ryan, Bridget, Conor, Mathena and Keenan; and great grandson Jack. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Ellen Dunn and her husband, Bob, along with many nieces and nephews.
Kathleen graduated from Saint Michael’s High School and began her career as a hairdresser. With her children often in tow, she traveled around town, bringing her talents into the homes of family and friends. As her children grew older, Kathleen began working for her dear friend, Dr. Jean Anderson, as her administrative assistant.
Dr. Anderson often said that Kathleen knew more about her patients than she herself was able to uncover-a testament to Kathleen’s greatest gift: her extraordinary ability to understand and connect with people. She had a natural warmth and intelligence that made people feel heard, cared for, and valued.
Kathleen spent the remainder of her professional career as the Deputy Assistant Registrar of Probate Court. She was honored with an Excellence Award from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in recognition of her handling her duties with grace, intelligence, and professionalism, as well as her coordination of several projects designed to improve the administration of justice within the courts and the community. One project especially close to her heart was helping to provide legal support to women affected by domestic violence. Annually, she and her granddaughter Bridget would participate in the Hot Chocolate run, fundraising for domestic violence.
In retirement, Kathleen became a Park Ranger at her treasured local Look Park, a role that brought together so many things she loved: nature, birds, flowers, and, most of all, people. Her kindness and genuine interest in others made her a beloved presence there.
Kathleen loved to travel, especially to Ireland, the homeland of her family, and to Nantucket Island, where her son Andrew lived for many years. She cherished the beauty and memories of these places and the time spent with the people she loved.
But Kathleen’s greatest devotion was always her family. She was the listening ear, the cheerleader, the intelligent voice of reason, and the gentle, warm presence who made everyone feel that they mattered. To all she was simply-and forever-Our Grammy.
Kathleen leaves behind not only a family who loved her deeply, but a legacy of compassion, strength, intelligence, generosity, and service to others. She touched countless lives through her work, her friendships, and her unwavering ability to care for people.
Our dear Grammy will be missed terribly and remembered always. Her love will continue to live on in the family she cherished above all else and in the many lives she made better simply by being part of them.
A Celebration of Life will be held at The Northampton Country Club on August 20, 2026 at 4pm.
