South Hadley, MA – Kathryn Yager Callahan died peacefully on August 22, 2026, surrounded by her family. She will be deeply missed.
Kathryn is survived by her four daughters, Ellen Callahan Olden (Bryan); Christina Callahan; Liz Callahan Mulcahy (Michael); and Sarah Callahan Zusi (Damian). She is also survived by her sister, Mary Fults, and her grandchildren, Jack, Lily, Mira, Tyler (Audrey), Matthew, Riley, and Callahan. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John M. Callahan; her parents, Leo and Ruth Yager; and her two brothers, Edward and David Yager.
Kathryn was born and raised in Watertown, New York, where she graduated from Immaculate Heart Catholic High School. She went on to St. Joseph’s College of Nursing, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Boston College and her Master of Science in Nursing from Anna Maria College.
Kathryn met the love of her life, John Montgomery Callahan, while they were students at Boston College. Together they raised their four daughters and shared 57 years of loving marriage.
Over a remarkable 58 year career, she served as a nurse, teacher, community advocate, and public servant. She began her nursing career in Boston. She later joined Smith Vocational School, where she taught nursing in the LPN program and health education for 31 years. Kathryn was a gifted teacher who cared deeply about her students. She took tremendous pride in their accomplishments and remained connected to many of them throughout her life.
Kathryn volunteered in many ways with numerous community organizations, including teaching religious education. She received the Massachusetts Professional Education Committee Award from the American Cancer Society for her community service and leadership in cancer advocacy. She helped local chapters improve patient care, fund vital cancer research, and enhance the quality of life for cancer survivors and their families. She was especially passionate about the “We Can Weekend,” an annual program that supported cancer patients and their families. After retiring from teaching, Kathryn served as a community outreach coordinator for the Hampshire County House of Correction. There, she facilitated innovative programs, including one that helped incarcerated parents reconnect with their children in meaningful and productive ways. Her work was recognized in 2018 by the St. Thomas More Society for outstanding acts of public service and commitment to justice. She was also honored by the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hampshire County as a “Champion for Children.”
Kathryn had a zest for life and a wonderful ability to make ordinary moments feel special. She loved Martha’s Vineyard, museums, music, theater, politics, tennis, and cooking. She was a founding member of the Gourmet Club, where friends gathered over fabulous food, wine, laughter, and conversation. No one loved a fun themed party more than Kathryn. She had a gift for bringing people together.
Kathryn lived a life defined by faith, family, friendship, service and love. She cared for countless people throughout her career, taught generations of students, advocated for children and families, and gave generously of herself to her community. Her greatest joy was her family. She will be remembered for her infectious smile, her strength, her generosity, and her extraordinary ability to make people feel loved.
We are grateful to the staff at JGS Lifecare in Longmeadow who lovingly cared for Kathryn.
A celebration of life will be held at St Patrick’s Church in South Hadley on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society and the Alzheimer’s Association.
