Hatfield, MA – George Smarz Sr., age 89, passed away peacefully on Friday August 21. George was born on November 27, 1936 in Northampton where he was raised by his parents George and Stella (Ozga). After graduating from Northampton High, he received his bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He worked for General Electric and then United Technologies until his retirement.
An avid pilot, George flew propeller and gilder aircraft at Pilgrim Airport in Hatfield. He also was a flight instructor and enjoyed teaching new students to fly. He was a long-time member of the Hatfield Lions Club and was their treasurer for many years.
He is survived by his son George Jr. and his daughter Laurie both of Southampton. He is predeceased by his wife Dorothy and his step brother Joe Gwozdzik. He also leaves behind his step sister Christine Kos and her husband Chester and his step brother’s wife Jane all of Chicopee as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday August 29, 2026 at Our Lady of Grace Church in Hatfield. Calling hours are 9:30am-10:00am at the church and the funeral mass will immediately follow. Burial is at Calvary Cemetery in Hatfield.
