September begins Neonatal Intensive Care Awareness Month when we recognize the babies who are born fighting for their lives; the mothers whose first holds and breastfeedings never happened or were abruptly cut short, and who spend their days seeking moments — from down the hall, across the street, or miles away; the other parents whose days, too, are spent navigating and supporting, not knowing for how long; the siblings caught in the unknown; the labor and delivery nurses and doctors whose skills, knowledge, and instincts give the babies a chance; the NICU nurses, doctors, and staff who work so diligently, precisely, and carefully to care for and protect those in their charge. Let’s remember them, and light the world green this month.
