- The Northampton School Committee voted unanimously yesterday to appoint Robert A. Young a vice principal of the enlarged Jackson Street School. The committee chose Young, principal of the Vernon Street School, for the newly created post over Richard F. Smith, principal of Feiker School.
- The City Council is expected to name Raymond Kochin of Kochin Real Estate as Northampton’s new full-time assessor. The council has been looking for another full-time assessor since long-time assessor John Sharac retired in May.

- As the four-weekend run of racing at the Three-County Fair wraps up this weekend, fair officials say the addition of simulcasting was profitable, even if it didn’t meet everyone’s expectations. With the terrorist attacks that shook the nation Tuesday still at the center of attention, turnout for the final weekend is anybody’s guess.
- With profuse apologies Thursday night, the Northampton School Committee canceled a curriculum day planned for Tuesday after a teacher objected that it had been scheduled on a Jewish holy day. At the School Committee meeting Sue Fink, a fifth-grade teacher at Jackson Street School, said she believes the committee made a mistake when it scheduled a curriculum day on Rosh Hashanah.

- The city of Northampton is moving ahead with new policies aimed at curbing smoking, particularly among youths, a move that angered several city shop owners Thursday night. Convenience and specialty store owners voiced opposition during a public hearing held by the Board of Health.
- Five Colleges Inc. celebrated a milestone Thursday when it broke ground on a new library annex that will one day house 2 million volumes. The 35,000-square-foot building is being built on a 12-acre parcel off Plain Road in Hatfield, adjacent to Interstate 91.
