Dear Republican members of Congress: I am an 80-year-old Independent who is angry and horrified about what’s hapJpening in our country. I’m writing to ask for your help. Republicans control the House, the Senate, and the presidency, and the Supreme Court. You’re in a position to do good things for the country. But it looks to me like president Trump is not really interested in doing good things. He seems to be more interested in accumulating personal power, getting even with people he doesn’t like, and creating monuments to himself.

I can’t believe that you wanted what has happened since Trump was inaugurated in January. Aren’t you, like me, shocked at the appointment to the president’s cabinet of people with little or no expertise in the areas they’re responsible for, whose main qualification is blind loyalty to the president rather than to the Constitution and the country? Did you think that the cuts to federal programs would be as chaotic and mean-spirited as they have been? Yes, immigration to the U.S. should be orderly and controlled, but why has the treatment of immigrants, whether they’re citizens or not, been so cruel? Is it necessary to increase healthcare costs for working people dramatically? Most Americans are sick and tired of the lies, the language of division, and the attacks on free speech and the rule of law. Aren’t you? Do you think it was smart to start a war with Iran, end support for Ukraine, and kiss up to Russia and China while alienating our allies?

I just can’t believe that even half the Republicans in Congress are happy with what’s happening in our country and how our country is interacting with the rest of the world. And if you’re not happy, please do something to stop it! You control the Congress of the United States of America. You have the power and the authority to stop this out-of-control president before he ruins our nation and undermines America’s stature in the world.
