- Edward A. McColgan of Northampton held a tiny lead today over his opponent, Edward M. O’Brien of Easthampton, as the recount of the Democratic primary ballots in the First Congressional District race moved into a second week. An unofficial Gazette tally showed McColgan with a 17-vote lead over O’Brien.
- After a labor dispute over workloads and duties, seven nurses’ aides last week refused to show up for work at the Northampton Nursing Home and were fired by nursing home Administrator Leon Dickinson. He alleged the aides left 40 patients unattended, although he said in an interview with the Gazette later that he had obtained substitutes to work the affected shift.

- As a construction crew pours the foundation for the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art next to Hampshire College in Amherst, museum organizers are offering previews of the exhibits and events to come at the opening next fall. Through Sunday, a collection of children’s book posters, “Celebrating the Art of the Picture Book,” is on view at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
- Brooks & Butterfield, a new day spa at 140 Main Street, will hold a grand opening on Oct. 6. Patricia A. Butterfield and Lenore Brooks said their most recent venture will occupy 1,400 square feet — the entire second floor of the building that formerly housed the Words & Pictures Museum.

- After nearly a week of construction, it’s anchors away for the Jackson Street School’s new ship-themed playground. The school’s old playground was torn down in 2014 because it was beyond repair and did not pass inspection. Construction of the $225,000 project began last Thursday and took four 12-hour days to complete.
- After more than two years as Southampton town administrator, Heather Budrewicz announced her resignation at a Select Board meeting Tuesday. Budrewicz has accepted a position as town administrator for Ashburnham. She was chosen from a pool of more than 30 applicants, according to Sentinel & Enterprise of Fitchburg.
