- The Three County Fair Association has filed a request for a special exception under the city’s zoning laws for permission for up to 60 days of harness racing. Mayor David Cramer reported the matter to the City Council at a special meeting last night.
- America “rolled up its sleeves” today for the first swine flu shots, the largest immunization program in the nation’s history. But some state health officials said they were uncertain when and whether they would get all the vaccine they need.

- Two Northampton residents have received separate Fulbright awards. Stephen Simurda, who teaches journalism at the University of Massachusetts, traveled this month to Slovakia to teach courses on freedom of the press. Mary Olson, a clinical psychologist with an office at 151 Main Street, was awarded a Fulbright grant to lecture and conduct research in Finland this fall.
- A double line of 55 motorcyclists, riding side-by-side with their headlights on, wound through Northampton Sunday to raise money for the Fire Department, which wants to buy an all-terrain vehicle to help fight fires in hilly parts of the city. The effort raised $4,522 in pledges from businesses and individuals.

- Four finalists for Forbes Library director have been invited to each attend daylong interviews next month. The four are: Lynn Piotrowicz, director of the Tucker Free Library in Henniker, New Hampshire; Matthew DeLaney, administrative director of the Onondaga County Public Library in Syracuse, New York; Adam Novitt, director of the Lilly Library in Florence; and Lisa Downing, assistant director and patron services librarian at Forbes.
- Two new patrol officers are joining the Amherst Police Department. Justin H. Satkowski, 24, of Hadley, and Molly O. Farber, 24, of Palmer, were recently appointed to the force by Police Chief Scott P. Livingstone.
