LEVERETT — Informational sessions on creating a cultural district will be held at Town Hall twice this month.
Both meetings, Tuesday and again on Oct. 20, begin at 6 p.m. with artists, musicians, authors and other cultural workers in town invited to offer their ideas and to help the Select Board gauge community interest in the concept.
The premise of a cultural district comes from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which in 2011 opened the opportunity for cities and towns to create one or more cultural districts, designations that can join together historic buildings, conservation areas, cultural centers and individual artists.
David Henion, president of Leverett Arts & Crafts, has been spearheading research and maintaining contact with state officials, as well as representatives from various town institutions. Henion has said a cultural district could help define the town, create a tourism map and provide opportunities for artists and nonprofits by encouraging visits to local studios and galleries.
The cultural district would also represent a chance to expand public programming, encourage partnerships among local cultural workers and provide more opportunities for community get-togethers. For cultural workers in Leverett, it could bring more business opportunities and chances for collaboration.
Cultural districts also receive annual funding through grants from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
An application for designating a cultural district is due to the state in February. Leverett Town Hall is located at 9 Montague Road.
