The tragic death of Alan Porter (“Man killed while biking,” May 17) has prompted us to speak publicly about the chronic and dangerous traffic conditions which persist throughout the Bay State section of Northampton.
We write as parents who are raising our children along a perilous stretch of Federal Street sadly known to many as “that cut-through street.” Federal Street is terribly narrow, with no sidewalks, blind driveways, and very poor visibility.
It’s home to a bus stop and a nursing home. Toddlers take their first steps on Federal Street. And elders make their way down the block when the weather warms up. But they’re all largely invisible to motorists flying past. Cars and trucks defy the already too high speed limit, swerving with just inches to spare to avoid strollers, wheelchairs, and tricycles.
To the family of Alan Porter, our neighbors: We’re so very sorry for your loss.
To the Transportation and Parking Commission, which voted to install speed bumps on Nonotuck Street soon after Mr. Porter’s untimely death: It’s only a matter of time before we’ll face another traffic-related tragedy unless you and the Department of Public Works act swiftly toward a comprehensive solution.
And to the drivers who barrel down Federal Street at all hours of the day and night: Please slow down. And take care. Lives depend on it.
