Baseball season is fully underway in the Pioneer Valley, with local teams looking to make their marks with a fresh slate to begin the year. With multiple Western Mass. and state tournament appearances in 2025, local teams are looking to again be competing at a high level this go around.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of each Hampshire County baseball squad:

Amherst

Coach: Jordan McCarthy/first season

Outlook: The Hurricanes are hoping for a bounce back season with a young group and a new head coach. Despite the youth in McCarthy’s group, the level of talent should provide an interesting outlook especially as the season progresses. Cyrus Arwade headlines the group of young talent, hoping to provide a big impact in his freshman season not only on the mound, but behind and at the plate.

Outlook: After a lackluster end to the year in 2025, the Gators are out to a great start to begin the new season. Gateway has found a ton of success on the mound, with Jacob Maynard backing up his great sophomore season last year with a hot first few outings in 2026. Weston Anderson has been a great number two as well, helping keep opposing teams off the board at a high level so far.

As the only two seniors on the roster, Brodie Funk and Anthony Santiago are hoping to continue their hot starts at the plate, eventually leading the team to follow suit.

Hampshire

Coach: Mark Baldwin/fourth season

Outlook: After coming up short in the Western Mass. Class B tournament and the Division 4 state tournament in 2025, the Raiders have entered the new season with a vengeance. Offensively, Hampshire has proved to be an impressive group to begin the year, with consistent production throughout the lineup. Joe Moro leads the group as a senior presence, with an impressive junior class alongside him including Riley Florek, Vynce Car and Tom Moore. Colby Cabrini, Jonny Angers and Colin Hogan headline a pitching staff who also has had a solid stretch out of the gate.

Holyoke

Outlook: The Purple Knights have begun the year much better than last season, in large part due to Aiden Robinson’s success both on the mound and at the plate. Jeremy Francisco has also been a solid arm in the staff to begin the year, while Justin Rivera’s bat has been hot out of the gate.

Hopkins

Outlook: After coming up just short in the Western Mass. Class D finals and the Round of 32 in the Division 5 state tournament last year, the Golden Hawks have been near flawless to begin the 2026 season. After breaking the school record for hits last season, Chace Earle is looking to continue building on an impressive career throughout his senior season. Matt Vassallo will also look to be a great senior presence, while Aiden Keeling-Lococo and Tucker Russell hope to make a big impact in their junior years.

Outlook: The 2025 season was one to forget for the Blue Devils, who have already found more success to begin the new year. Johnny Nields-Duffy looks to lead his teammates to a successful year with his prowess at the plate, with the team still improving as their first season under new head coach Ariel Guitron continues to play out.

Roster: Harrison LaFlamme (Sr.), Darren Caney (Sr.), Oscar Higurea (So.), Hunter Williams (Fr.), Mason Place (Fr.), Brody Phaneuf (Fr.), Callan Payne (Fr.), Nate Maloney (Fr.), Owen Lauder (Fr.), Boden Crevier (Fr.).

Outlook: The Falcons graduated a large group of players after last year’s rebuilding season, coming into the new campaign with a fresh bunch of talent. Harrison LaFlamme returns to the team for his senior season after throwing a no-hitter in 2025, and looks to be even stronger this year. With only two upperclassmen on the roster, Smith Academy should continue to improve with more experience.

Smith Voc

Coach: Luis Bonilla

League: Tri-County North

Last year’s record: 13-6

Roster: Logan Brothers (Sr.), Kaleb Jorritsma (Sr.), Yadiel Poppie (Jr.), Corey Kirkendall (Jr.), Gavin Kuchuca (So.), Lucas Lussier (So.), Owen Belden (Fr.), Nolen Ingram (Fr.).

Outlook: After a great regular season that ended with losses in the Western Mass. Class B tournament quarterfinals and Division 4 state tournament preliminary round in 2025, the Vikings have struggled to begin the new year. With a good mix of veterans and young underclassmen, the path is there to turn things around down the stretch.

South Hadley

Coach: Matt Foley/29th season

League: Bi-County South

Last year’s record: 12-9

Roster: Logan Carpenter (Sr.), Gavin Carpenter (Sr.), Noah Carillon (Sr.), Memphis Huertas (Sr.), Ryan Netkovick (Sr.), Griffin Soderbaum (Sr.), Justin Moskal (Sr.), Caiden Drohan (Sr.), Lincoln Belsky (Jr.), Jaxon Pueschel (Jr.), Matthew Butler (Jr.), Brody Keller (Jr.), Camren Carpenter (So.), Charlie Maxwell (So.), Anthony Bartusewich (So.), Adam Ozga (So.), Nolan Soderbaum (Fr.).

Outlook: This year’s Tigers feature a ton of experience, with head coach Matt Foley’s group featuring 12 upperclassmen who’ve had success at the varsity level. Memphis Huertas has gotten off to a hot start with his bat to begin the year, while holding things down defensively behind the dish. Matthew Butler has been a great arm headlining the rotation, hopping into a bigger role for his junior season.
