SOUTHAMPTON — Residents will decide Tuesday whether to give the school district $80,000 for the purchase of laptop computers for the William E. Norris School, a new requirement for Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System testing.

The transfer request is among 30 articles on the warrant for a special Town Meeting which will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Norris School cafeteria/gymnasium.

Other capital improvements on the warrant include $88,620 for the purchase of a brush truck for the Fire Department to replace the existing truck, which is a 1984 Army surplus model.

The Highway Department is requesting $46,000 for a new wood chipper to replace the 24-year-old model that has reached the end of its useful life.

Other items on the warrant include:

$30,000 for the removal of a 4,000-gallon gasoline storage tank. The warrant states that the town was denied insurance coverage for the tank and the Department of Environmental Protection has mandated that it be removed to avoid sanctions;

A request from the Select Board to hire a professional consultant to assist a screening committee with the hiring for a permanent town administrator. The town will vote on the transfer of $5,000 to hire a consultant for the search.

The consultant would help review candidate qualifications, do background checks and contact references, according to the warrant.

Since November, Robert Markel, former mayor of Springfield, has been serving as the interim town administrator.

A transfer request to cover an anticipated deficit in overtime pay for the Police Department. The department seeks $35,000 to be transferred from police wages account to the police overtime wage account.
