NORTHAMPTON – Smith College has been awarded $496,638 from the state in capital funding to purchase instrumentation equipment for two college research centers.
On Thursday, Gov. Charlie Baker and the Massachusetts Life Science Center announced Smith’s award along with other large funds awarded to numerous institutions.
“The projects that we are announcing today demonstrate our commitment to investing in the innovation economy, supporting game-changing technological research, and creating jobs in every region of the Commonwealth,” Baker said in a press release.
A total of $39 million has been awarded to research centers and life sciences training facilities at colleges and schools throughout the state.
“By spurring new scientific breakthroughs, and improving the quality of STEM education for students across Massachusetts,” Housing and Economic Development Secretary Jay Ash said in a press release. “These awards will make the Commonwealth a more dynamic place to live and work, and they will equip local residents with the skills needed to retain Massachusetts’s title as the most innovative state in the nation.”
According to the press release, the award will allow Smith College to train life science major with “state-of-the-art” technology.
