Sojourner Truth scholarship applications

The deadline for Sojourner Truth Scholarships was extended to June 15 due to COVID-19.

The Sojourner Truth Memorial Committee is eager to receive scholarship applications and will award up to three $1,000 scholarships if appropriate applications from public high school seniors are received. High school students have been leaders in recent protests and the committee wants to honor and acknowledge their work for racial justice or other social justice causes. Information about Sojourner Truth and applications are available at sojournertruthmemorial.org.

Applicants are required to submit an essay approximately two to three double-spaced pages in length. To enhance applications, students may want to add support that they have on hand or easily available — a letter of recommendation, a résumé or a college essay — along with pertinent biographical information. Sojourner Truth Scholarship essays are evaluated on the basis of:

■leadership and initiative with social justice activities;

■relevance drawn between Sojourner Truth and applicant’s goals;

■attention to writing and grammar.

UMassFive college funding available

UMassFive, in collaboration with Credit Union Student Choice, is providing clear guidance and flexible funding solutions for college-bound students and their families.

UMassFive’s application process now allows borrowers to establish a line of credit without requiring them to specify a school or input a specific loan amount. This innovative approach is unique in the private student loan marketplace and will give borrowers peace of mind, knowing they have secured funding regardless of their decision for this fall.

Additionally, this setup means borrowers know what funds they have available now, and in the future, without the need to reapply each year. Once they have decided on attendance at a particular school, and/or determined the exact loan amount needed, borrowers can easily return to their account to finalize their funding request.

In addition to the online information hub, UMassFive members can receive one-on-one advice about planning and paying for college from a College Access and Repayment Counselor, and access an online library of self-paced webinars.
