At first Douglas Raybeck of Amherst thought it was serendipity that our national bird, a bald eagle, landed in his backyard early in the afternoon on the Fourth of July. The bird, which appeared to be a 2-year-old male, sat on the fence for about 20 minutes and then spent another half hour in a nearby tree. โI took him a half of a freezer-burned chicken breast and I’m hoping he comes back for the other half,โ says Raybeck. But then later in the week, two more visitors showed up looking a lot like the first bird and Raybeck began to reconsider. โWhat I had thought to be an immature eagle may instead be an immature red tail,โ he wrote in a subsequent email.
