GOSHEN – In the end, the second time was the charm.
Carla Raymond, who unsuccessfully ran for a seat on the Chesterfield-Goshen Regional School Committee last year, won election to the committee in Saturday’s annual town election.
Raymond, a mother of two and a social worker, won election to the open seat by defeating consultant Andrew Watt by a margin of 48 to 37 votes.
“I’m excited,” Raymond said.
She also said that she’s interested in helping the committee come up with a plan to address staff retention at New Hingham Regional Elementary School, and to get involved in the budgeting process.
While the School Committee race was the only contested race on the ballot, Keith Wright did receive 28 write-in votes in the moderator election won by Corey Carvalho. Two other people also received write-in votes in that race.
Wright, who held the moderator’s position for the previous term, was looking to step down but because Carvalho might not be able to take the job because of his position on the Trial Court, Wright said that he’d be willing step up again, according to Town Clerk Kristin Estelle.
Turnout for the town election was 11%, with 88 out of the town’s 801 registered voters casting ballots. Of those 88 votes, seven of them were absentee ballots.
Estelle said that the turnout was comparable to other town elections of recent years.
“It went really smoothly,” she said. “No problems whatsoever.”
Estelle also said it was nice to see two new candidates run for office this year: Andrew Watt and Peri Hall. Hall won an uncontested seat on the Select Board.
