SOUTHAMPTON — A Southampton man has been arrested on charges of operating under the influence after alleging hitting a mother and her baby with his vehicle near 43 Glendale Road on Tuesday around 6:30 p.m., according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
Jeffrey Russell, 37, was arraigned on Wednesday in Northampton District Court and pleaded not guilty to charges of operating under the influence of alcohol (second offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and operating under the influence causing serious bodily injury.
Upon arrival at the scene, emergency personnel found a 39-year-old woman and her 1-year-old child suffering from serious injuries, both of whom were transported to Baystate Medical Center for treatment, according to the DA’s office. Russell was arrested after a preliminary investigation determined he was the driver of the Toyota Tundra involved in the crash. The mother and child are expected to survive, according to DA spokesperson Melissa Sippel.
The incident remains under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the Southampton Police Department.
Russell was represented by attorney Jonah Goldsmith of the Committee for Public Counsel Services at his arraignment. Assistant District Attorney Jared Hirsch represented the commonwealth and requested bail be set at $5,000. District Court Judge Jacklyn Connly set bail at $1,000.
