The Frontier Regional girls cross country had a 1-2-3 finish and beat Mohawk Trail Regional for the first time ever, 17-40, Thursday in South Deerfield.
Angelina Egland crossed the 2.72-mile finish in first place in 20 minutes, 18 seconds. Leah Gump followed in 20:32 and Abigail Howard in third in 20:45.
“The year we won Western Mass. we ran against them at Gateway and we lost by one point,” Frontier coach Bob Smith said. “It’s been a long time coming.”
Olivia Deane was fifth in 21:00 for the Red Hawks. Deane would have been playing volleyball this fall, but since the sport was pushed to the second fall season next year, she chose to run cross country for the first time.
Sasha Malo was sixth (21:01) to round of the scoring.
It was Frontier’s first meet of the season.
“We worked very hard. We had two waves of boys and three waves of girls. We did the five vs. five, 14 feet apart, two separate areas to finish. I think it worked flawlessly.”
Frontier 20, Mohawk 41 — Dan Fellows (16:16) was second, seventh grader Luke Howard (17:27) was third and Alexs Carey (17:28) was fourth as the Red Hawks placed six in the top eight and won at home.
West Springfield 180, Holyoke 182 — Ryan Maloney shot a 5-over 39 to share medalist honors with West Side’s Samuel Johnson at Wyckoff Country Club. John Lavelle added a 46 but the Purple Knights fell at home.
Frontier Regional 16½, Franklin Tech 7½ — The 1-2 punch of Mikey Corduff and Gunnar Moore led the Red Hawks at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls. Corduff scored medalist honors with a 36, and Moore was one shot behind him with a 37.
Corduff swept all four points in his No. 1 match, while Moore won three points.
Frontier’s Kyle Maynard and Rowan Blair each shot 42 and combined to score 7½ out of a possible eight points in the Nos. 3 and 5 spots, respectively.
Ware 151, Belchertown 161 — The Orioles had three players shoot 40 or better, but the Indians held on at Cold Spring Country Club.
Ryan O’Neil and Brady Perkins each had 39s, while Riley Breen added a 40 for the O’s.
John Soltys earned medalist honors with a 34 for Ware. Doug Mulligan had a 36.
Monson 189, South Hadley 194 — Nick Hartley had a 47 and followed by Ben Gardiner (48) and Keegan Earle (49), but the Tigers fell at The Ledges Golf Course.
Hopkins 246, Athol 275 — The Golden Hawks pulled out the victory in a best five-stroke scoring format played at Ellinwood Country Club.
Northampton 168, Westfield 175 — Galen Fowles fired a 2-over 38 to pace the Blue Devils at Tekoa Country Club. Camille Richmond added a 42, while Evan Yurko had a 43. Ben O’Connor shot 45.
