Amherst Regional’s quest for a ninth straight Western Massachusetts girls individual tennis championship begins this weekend.
Seeds for the Western tournament were released Wednesday.
Nya Saunders, the Hurricanes’ No. 1 player, earned a fifth seed with a 6-2 record. She will face tough competition as she looks to become the fourth different Amherst champion since 2009.
Longmeadow sisters Iris Gallo (8-0) and Hallie Gallo (9-0) are the first and second seeds, respectively.
Hailey Gurski (6-1) of Minnecghaug is third followed by Dominique Alves (9-2) of Ludlow.
Amherst’s Margaret O’Connell is seventh (4-1), while Frontier’s Celia Speth (7-1) is ninth.
Full player fields will be released Friday.
Recent Amherst grad Alison McCann won the last two titles. Her sister Nicole took home the previous three, while Maya Hart won from 2009-2011.
Ludlow’s Mary Jordan and McKenna Ryczek were the top-seeded doubles team. No local players were among the eight seeded teams.
The girls tournament will be held at Smith College, Saturday at Sunday. Matches begin at 9 a.m. both days.
The boys tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday at the tennis courts at Longmeadow High School. Matches begin at 8:45 a.m. both days.
Nathan Ji (3-2) of Amherst and Aiden O’Brien (6-1) of Northampton are the third and fourth seeds, respectively.
Longmeadow’s Jeffrey Mueller (5-0) and Minnechaug’s James Leone (7-2) are first and second, respectively.
Both of Northampton’s doubles teams are seeded.
Chris Raphael-Reilly and Charlie Ryan are the third seed at 3-2. Asa Geller and Matt Skarzynski are eighth at 3-2.
Both tournaments will conclude on May 20-21.
