Jack Fulton scored with 4 minutes, 23 seconds left in the game to lift UMass to a 2-1 nonconference win over Saint Peter’s, Friday in Amherst.
Amherst native Davis Smith opened the scoring for the Minutemen (1-1-1) in the 55th minute with a header off a throw-in. It was the sophomore’s first goal of the season. Saint Peter’s (0-3-0) answered by converting a penalty kick in the 71st minute.
The two squads struggled to find the goal in the first half, combining to place just two of 16 shots on target. They were more accurate in the second half as UMass put three of its five shots on frame and Saint Peter’s put three of nine on target.
Michigan 5, UMass 0 — Michigan scored twice in a 1:17 span late in the first half to open the floodgates in a 5-0 nonconference win over host UMass.
Michigan (1-2) outshot UMass (1-2) 24-2 in the game. Johanna Von Dem Borne made 13 saves on 17 shots and Megan Davies stopped four of the five shots she faced in a combined effort for the Minutewomen.
Emma Way scored twice to pace the Wolverines.
UMass has re-signed coach Kristi Stefanoni for three years, the school announced Thursday.
Stefanoni’s contract runs through the 2021 season.
The 2018 Atlantic 10 Conference coach of the year led the Minutewomen to a 35-win season last year to run her record to 121-112-1 over five seasons at the helm. In the past three years, UMass has not finished lower than third in the A-10 standings, including a perfect 21-0 record last season to win the regular-season title.
Gordon 3, Smith College 1 — The Pioneers dropped their season opener on the road, despite nine kills from Amy Hagen, 12 assists from Kimani Freeman and 17 digs from Anna Lynch.
