High schools: Frontier Regional boys basketball clinches Hampshire North title

Brett Robinson scored 13 points as the Frontier Regional boys basketball team bested Athol, 53-42, to clinch the Hampshire North league title in South Deerfield.

The Red Hawks (14-3, 7-0 Hampshire North) trailed 22-17 at halftime but attacked Athol’s zone defense better in the second half.

Donovan Hoffman and Sean Richter each added 10 points.

Northampton 66, Pope Francis 40 — Treyvon James-Salus dropped four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 17 points for the Blue Devils (5-12).

Connor Tobin added 10 points in the road win.

Smith Vocational 74, Gateway Regional 31 — Cole Boisvert and Isaiah Ortiz scored 14 points each for the Vikings in a road win. Jaxson Venne added 11 points, while Gabe Zink had 10 for Smith Vocational (8-8, 7-1 Tri-County South).

Evan Cortis led the Gators (2-16, 1-7) with 21 points.

Turners Falls 65, Hopkins Academy 64 — The Thunder (10-9, 4-3 Hampshire South) defeated the Golden Hawks (12-6, 5-2) on a putback buzzer-beater from Chase Novak and qualified for the postseason in the process.

Addison Phifer had a game-high 24 points for Hopkins Academy. Andrew Ciaglo contributed 21 points.

Putnam 58, Amherst Regional 46 — Zayd Sadiq had 18 points for the Hurricanes (7-10, 3-4 Valley), and Evan Stewart contributed 15 in the road loss.

Central 98, Holyoke 45 — Jael Cabrera had 11 points in a road loss for the Purple Knights (8-8, 3-4 Valley). Dereck Carattini added eight points, while Aiden Consedine and William Cruz scored seven each.

Hockey

Amherst Regional 3, Chicopee 3 — Brandon Peritz scored two goals, while Justin Masteralexis distributed two assists in a home draw. Chris Foster also found the net for the Hurricanes (12-3-2). Kouji Ishida, Carter Beckwith and Gunyoung Choi each had an assist.

Jon Hanscom stopped 23 shots.
