EASTHAMPTON — Residents interested in running for public office will have the opportunity to learn from local professionals at a training session later this month.
The event will feature retiring City Council President Joe McCoy along with political organizers Jackie Brousseau-Pereira and Heather LaPenn on July 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the second floor conference space of the Municipal Building at 50 Payson Ave.
The group is looking to share what they know about running effective campaigns for citizens interested in seeking office themselves, helping another candidate or doing issues advocacy.
McCoy said Tuesday that he believes many people who want to run for office are often too intimidated by the process to begin. Debunking these fears could increase civic participation in local elections, he said.
“We’re trying to remove some of the doubt so people can make their own decisions,” McCoy said.
Along with getting on the ballot, an explanation of campaign finance rules, how to craft political messaging, managing volunteers, connecting with voters and final “get out the vote” advice will be covered.
“People have an interest in running and an interest in participating and having their voice heard,” McCoy said.
