In a rematch of its dramatic, walk-off victory a day prior, the Amherst 14U baseball team cruised past Brattleboro Maroon, 8-1, in the PVYBL championship game of the Koufax division playoffs at Deerfield Academy on Saturday.
The Hurricanes scored eight unanswered runs following Brattleboro taking a 1-0 lead after just one inning, the bulk of which occurring during the bottom of the fifth when Amherst plated six straight runs.
Gus Garrett Peltier was lights out on the mound for Amherst, allowing one run in 6 1/3 innings of action. Jack Bajnoci closed out the contest for the ‘Canes, recording the final two outs.
Amherst wrapped up its season at 18-2-1 overall.
Amherst 3, Northampton 2 — The Hurricanes overcame a two-run deficit to down the Blue Devils and advance to the Koufax championship game.
Amherst scored thrice in the fifth inning. First, a two-RBI triple from Gus Garrett Peltier evened the score 2-2, then a RBI groundout from Cyrus Arwade gave the Hurricanes its first lead of the tilt.
Amherst pitcher Jonah Sommers was stellar, pitching all seven innings, while throwing 88 pitches. Sommers secured four strikeouts, no walks and 10 hits allowed.
Nicholas Theroux started on the bump for Northampton.
