I write in support of Matt Roland for Select Board in Southampton.
I got to know Roland well this past spring as an integral part of the Proposition 2½ override committee. At the first meeting, he made it known that he was ready and willing to do whatever was needed to help. Whether it was attending nightly meetings, answering questions, coordinating efforts of the committee or handing out fliers, he was there.
I have no doubt that Roland’s dedication, hard work, and efforts were directly correlated to the landmark passing of this override for the town and will translate into a successful Select Board member. He is a well- educated, civically engaged person who is not encumbered by special interests, town politics or relationships. Consequently, he can look at things critically, with an open mind and ask the questions necessary to make informed decisions on behalf of the town and its people.
I know there are people who think that Roland’s inexperience as a Select Board member is a deterrent to his election. However, I see this as an asset to the town. What can be better than having someone who can ask the “who’s, why’s and what’s” with a blank slate?
Roland can bring in a new perspective to the town and possibly a new outlook on items the town has wrestled with for a number of years. From the very beginning, he has spoken of the need for transparency in town government. I know this is very important to me and to others.
I have no doubt that Roland will embrace this as a Select Board member and provide the most open, fair and honest decisions. All the dealings I have had with him have proved this to be true. I think Southampton is ready for a new face and a change by supporting Roland in Tuesday’s special election.
