AMHERST – About 60 people took part in a golf tournament at the Amherst Golf Club on Saturday to raise money for the Hospice of the Fisher Home. The third annual benefit started off with a putting contest, but only one of the dozens of contestants had success on the 40-foot green and that was Maggie Balise of Hatfield. Balise, 82, was surprised at her good fortune, noting that her nickname is “Three-putt Maggie”. Before the 14+ teams scattered for the “shotgun” start of the nine-hole scramble, or “best ball”, tournament, everyone gathered on the first tee to join Ken Kahn of Leverett in a toast to his friend, the late Charlie Parham of Amherst, and the dedication of the tee to the longtime Amherst Golf Club member who had been a resident of the Hospice of the Fisher Home before his passing in March.
