GRANBY — Hampshire Regional senior Katy O’Connor flummoxed the Granby girls basketball defense.
She finished with 29 points in a 64-49 win Tuesday night.
“We were trying to go straight man. We just aren’t able to handle O’Connor, that’s the biggest problem with it,” Granby coach Tom Burke said. “We were trying to double, but even doubling her, she manages to get to the hoop.”
She scored 18 of her 29 points in the second half, when Hampshire (17-4, 6-2 Central) turned a three-point lead into a 16-point win. The Raiders outscored the Rams (10-10, 4-4 Central) 34-22 after halftime.
“A lot of times it just comes down to if you’re having a good day on offense, and we were having a really great day on offense,” O’Connor said.
Katelyn Pickunka added 15 points, and Caroline O’Connor added 10.
The O’Connor sisters and Pickunka caused the Rams problems on the offensive glass.
“That’s the biggest problem with their length and everything,” Burke said. “Whether it’s zone or man, we struggle to rebound against them. We don’t match (Katy) O’Connor and Pickunka in terms of height and length. That’s a challenge we face a lot.”
Granby was up to the task early. After surrendering a 7-0 run to start the game, the Rams battled back to take an 11-9 lead with 2 minutes, 8 seconds left in the first quarter on a Nora Young layup. Young finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.
Senior guard Kate Sullivan powered Granby’s early offensive consistency. She scored 11 of her team-high 13 points in the first half and added six assists, four steals and four blocks.
“I think she’s starting to get a little more comfortable with her play after a couple weeks,” Burke said.
Sullivan has played in five games this season after returning from an ACL injury.
Hampshire altered its defense to limit her effectiveness. The Raiders went to a triangle-and-two defense instead of man to man and shadowed Sullivan off the ball.
“She had a helluva first half,” Hampshire coach Amy Cyr said. “We decided to take the ball out of her hands.”
Mallory Beauregard and Kaeleigh Croteau each added eight points, but the Rams couldn’t erode Hampshire’s lead.
They got as close as six with 4:57 left after Beauregard hit her second 3 to make it 52-46.
Hampshire outscored Granby 12-3 down the stretch.
“They’ve got a lot of hype in here, their fans are always really great,” Katy O’Connor said. “It’s hard to beat them at their home court, especially on senior night.”
