NORTHAMPTON — Deaths from the coronavirus in Massachusetts topped 6,500 Wednesday as the state Department of Public Health reported 527 new cases and 74 more fatalities.
The official death toll in the United States from the virus passed 100,000 on Wednesday.
Massachusetts has now recorded 94,220 cases of COVID-19 and 6,547 deaths. As of Wednesday, 843 cases have been recorded in Hampshire County, where 82 people have died from the virus. Franklin County has seen 317 cases and 47 deaths, and Hampden County has reported 5,845 cases and 554 deaths.
Wednesday’s report from the state was based on 6,663 new tests, out of a total of 552,144 tests performed. There are 2,106 people hospitalized statewide with COVID-19, 556 of them in intensive care.
Cooley Dickinson Hospital was treating six inpatients with confirmed COVID-19 infection as of Wednesday, four of whom were in intensive care.
An additional 66 outpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection. The hospital has had 717 people test positive overall.
Information on new virus cases and deaths from was delayed Wednesday.
Baystate Health is treating 58 inpatients, 56 of whom are hospitalized at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, for confirmed COVID-19 infection, including 14 patients in critical care units.
Forty inpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 infection.
Baystate has tested 12,687 people to date, with 1,697 results coming back positive, 10,892 negative, and 98 pending results.
The state’s Executive Office of Health and Human Services reported the death of a veteran resident at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home on Wednesday, though this person tested negative for COVID-19.
In total, 93 veteran residents at the facility have died over the course of the pandemic, 76 of whom tested positive for the virus. Sixteen tested negative, and one veteran resident’s status is unknown.
Eighty-four employees have tested positive.
