  • The remnants of Hurricane Belle in Hampshire County injured one man, caused many power outages and scattered tree limbs on lawns and highways. Authorities in Northampton and surrounding towns reported few instances of property damage. Trees falling in Amherst damaged a parked truck and narrowly missed a home.
  • Paul R. Stone, 19, son of Lucille M. Stone, 150 Glendale Road, recently was promoted to Army specialist four, while serving with the First Infantry Division at Ft. Riley, Kan. Stone, an information specialist in Headquarters Company of the division, entered the Army in March 1975, completed basic training at Ft. Dix, N.J., and was last stationed at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, Ind.

  • After four years on the Planning Board, M. Sanford Weil Jr., a longtime community volunteer and former zoning board member, has resigned his position to move to Florida. Wayne Feiden, director of the city’s planning and development office, said Tuesday Weil, 89, submitted his resignation last week, citing health reasons.
  • Easthampton Mayor Michael Tautznik has drawn up a list of 12 residents to represent the city on the School Building Committee to oversee the renovation of Easthampton High School and the consolidation of three elementary schools. The committee’s purpose will be to continue the progress already made on the building plan and help convince taxpayers, who would bear the cost until state reimbursement arrives.

  • One of the owners of the Round Hill Road building destroyed by fire Friday says his company plans to repair the historic property so that displaced tenants can return to their homes. The fire, which raged into early Saturday morning at 49 Round Hill Road, forced eight adults, one baby and a dog, from their homes, at the adjacent 47 Round Hill Road.
  • The life of Sarah Wallis Stevens, wife of former longtime Williston Academy headmaster, will be honored Saturday. Stevens died in February at the age of 99. She was a beloved fixture of life at Williston and in Easthampton from 1949 to 1972, during the tenure of her husband Phillips Stevens as Williston headmaster.
