HADLEY – Roosevelt Street remained closed Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. and police were still looking for the driver of a 2012 Volkswagen Tiguan who allegedly fled the scene last night after crashing the vehicle into a utility pole, knocking it over, police said.
The call came in at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. According to the Hadley Police Department’s Facebook page, a witness saw the Tiguan swerving, and the driver failed to compensate for a turn in the road, crashing into a telephone pole just south of the Amherst town line at the intersection of Roosevelt Street and Knightley Road.
The Facebook post said a witness then saw the driver flee the scene, and that there were no other passengers. Only one vehicle was involved, police said.
Sgt. Douglas Costa said that, after crashing through the telephone pole, the Tiguan hit a tree.
“Given the damage, the operator was driving at very high speeds to cause the damage that occurred,” Costa said via email Wednesday morning.
The crash resulted in the closure of Roosevelt and a temporary power outage for parts of Amherst and Hadley. When contacted Wednesday morning shortly before 8 a.m., police said the road would remain closed for a few more hours. The crash remains under investigation, police said.
