“Oh, the Places He Went”

He had brains in his head.

He had feet in his shoes.

He could steer himself any direction he’d choose.

Wherever he flew, he was the best of the best.

Wherever he went, he topped all the rest.

Except when he wouldn’t,

Because, sometimes, he couldn’t.

I’m sorry to say so,

But, sadly, and so dim,

That Bang-ups and Hang-ups could happen to him.

He went down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace,

And ground on for miles cross weirdish wild space,

Headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.

The Waiting Place …

But somehow he escaped all that waiting and staying,

He found the bright places where Boom Bands were playing.

Oh, the places he went! There was fun to be done!

And the magical things …he could do with that bowl

made him the winning-est winner of all.

Fame! He was as famous as famous could be, with the whole wide world watching him on TV.

Except when they didn’t,

Because sometimes they wouldn’t.

All Alone! Whether he liked it or not,

Alone was something he’d be quite a lot.

Would that he remembered that Life’s a Great Balancing Act.

And did he succeed?

Yes! He did, indeed!

(98 and ¾ percent guaranteed).

LOU, with thanks to Dr. Seuss.
And a toast to Anthony Bourdain

Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.

I’ll try.

On a different note, next week is
our 10th anniversary of writing Lou & Lucy’s Leftovers. That’s a lot of leftovers! Probably about the same amount that are crammed into Lou’s fridge.

I will be expounding on that next Saturday. Not Lou’s fridge, the anniversary of this column.
