AMHERST — The town is holding its first State of the Town from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday at the middle school auditorium.

The event, which takes place exactly a year after the 13 members of the Town Council were sworn in, will begin with remarks by Town Manager Paul Bockelman and Town Council President Lynn Griesemer.

The town charter adopted in March 2018 requires that the president and town manager each year “address the elected bodies, officers of the town, and the public on the state of affairs of the town.”

Bockelman said the event might better be held at the beginning of the calendar year, when newly elected officials take office. But with no council election this year, and the anniversary of last year’s change in Amherst’s form of government being marked, holding the State of the Town in December seemed appropriate, he said.

The event will also feature a performance by members of the Amherst Regional High School Band, a ceremonial swearing-in of several new and promoted firefighters and police officers, and remarks by State Sen. Jo Comerford and State Rep. Mindy Domb.

Both School Committee Chairwoman Anastasia Ordonez and Austin Sarat, president of the Jones Library trustees, will also offer comments before Griesemer makes closing thoughts.
