A University of Massachusetts Amherst student and her brother were stuck at the Brussels airport after it was hit by a terrorist attack Tuesday morning, though both are safe, according to a university spokesman.
“We’ve found that there was a student and her brother who were traveling through Brussels and are stuck at the airport,” Patrick J. Callahan said Tuesday afternoon. “We know that they’re safe but we don’t know anything further.”
He said the trip was not affiliated with the university.
Meantime, the only UMass student studying in the Belgian capital has checked in with school officials and is safe, Callahan said.
Callahan said he could not provide the names of those people.
Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith colleges reported that they have no students studying in Belgium.
Explosions went off at an airport and a metro station in Brussels Tuesday morning that left at least 30 dead and 250 injured. The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility.
Callahan said all UMass students studying in Europe have been confirmed to be safe.
There are no Amherst College students studying in Belgium, though one student living abroad does travel in and out of that country often, college spokeswoman Caroline Hanna said. That student is safe.
Amherst College officials on Tuesday emailed all other students studying in Europe and had heard back from about half of them by afternoon. All confirmed they were safe, Hanna said.
None of the 14 Hampshire College students studying in Europe is based in Belgium, spokesman John Courtemanche said.
“We’re actively reaching out to them to make sure that they’re OK, but we don’t expect that they’re in Belgium,” he said. “We’ll make sure to contact every one of them.”
There are no Mount Holyoke students studying in Belgium, though there are some in neighboring France, spokeswoman Julia France said.
“We checked in with them, and none are visiting Belgium,” she said. “They’re safe.”
And there are no Smith College students studying in Belgium, spokeswoman Stacey Schmeidel said.
“But it is spring break in many European programs. We are checking in with all of our students to see if any of them are traveling in Belgium,” she said.
