NORTHAMPTON — The 16th annual adult spelling bee will take place this evening, Wednesday, March 30, and the Daily Hampshire Gazette’s “Headliners,” will be defending their championship title.
The event will be held at JFK Middle School on 100 Bridge Road at 6 p.m. with a dinner at 5 p.m.
Last year’s winning word was daguerreotype, a long abandoned photography technique. Headliners spellers Ellie Cook, Laurel Gardner and James Pentland correctly spelled the word after missing three other words in a row: reboant, logaoedic and pargyline.
The event, which is sponsored by Easthampton Savings Bank and PeoplesBank, is a fundraiser for Northampton Education Foundation and its Small Grants for Teachers program. The grants support field trips and class projects in the public schools..
In 2015, $12,000 was raised.
