Tom Turkeys

Newton Street, Belchertown

Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely, South Hadley

I was in the back yard of a friend, off of Route 9 in Belchertown last Saturday, when four wild turkeys strolled through. There were three toms (males) and one hen (female). Although two of the toms were noisily strutting around while displaying their beautiful tail feathers, the third one just quietly walked along. At one point one of the displaying toms went to the quiet one as if to say โ€œSee, this is how you do it.โ€ Maybe that was the right way, but it wasnโ€™t bringing any results as the hen had silently wandered off.
