I’ve seen it a few times over my years as a photographer: a dog runs onto a softball or baseball field during a game.

It happened again last Friday at Northampton High School during the Blue Devils’ game against South Hadley, and the situation seemed to tickle Northampton pitcher Anna Kerwood, left, and third baseman Calista LeBron.

What I’ve enjoyed most on each occasion is the dog’s look of clear delight — like he’s getting away with something.

In this case, the pooch ran out between the sixth and seventh innings, so it had no effect on the game, other than to bring a smile to players and fans. I guess you could call it a sixth-inning stretch.
