Mallard Ballet
Route 202, Granby
Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely, South Hadley
I often stop at the small pond next to the Senior Center on Route 202 in Granby to check for great blue herons, ducks, etc. to photograph. On this particular day earlier this month there were no females, but several male mallards.
These two swam into the center of the pond, stopped, and began, in almost synchronized movements, to preen their feathers. When finished they swam to the pond’s edge and, again in unison, lowered their heads to feed. It was a real duck ballet.
Created with a handheld DSLR camera with a telephoto zoom lens.
