The future of America sure isn’t looking so bright, especially with the inevitable legalization of recreational marijuana.

After sitting in my car in stand-still traffic on Saturday, watching countless young people flocking towards the fairgrounds like a herd of cattle to attend Extravaganja, I couldn’t help but notice how the bright and innovative future that America has set out to achieve for itself will be unobtainable.

Not only does marijuana use during teenage years up through the mid- to late 20s have irreversible effects on the development of the brain, but it also can lead to dependency, addiction, anxiety, depression, paranoia, increased risk of heart attacks and lung cancer … the list goes on.

Would you like to look back at who made the comments to the Gazette about Extravaganja? Individuals between 20 and 30, all proudly saying how much they love pot and enjoy smoking.

What is the world coming to? Let’s stop comparing pot to alcohol and to opiates, saying that “it’s not so bad.”

Can we look at it for what it is? It is a drug that is giving the youth of America a flat affect, insatiable hunger for food (not passion), and an excuse to cope with the struggles of everyday life that the rest of us are dealing with.
