Ah, once upon a time the child asked, “Mom, can we have a dog?” How many times do you suppose that question has been posed over the ages?
Most often I believe the response has been, “No, who is going to be responsible for the dog? Will you feed the dog? Will you walk the dog in all kinds of weather because dogs need exercise and their toilet needs met outdoors?”
Then the response often focused on the fact that “we live in an apartment in the city, or a house with no land to accommodate the needs of this dog.” Thus, the answer was a considered, “No.”
Looking at this scenario and the issues of the people who are now adults and have chosen to own a dog that needs all of the above – apparently without the physical ability to meet these needs – are now asking the city of Northampton to provide them with a “dog park” where they can exercise their dog, unleashed, to run and romp in free abandonment.
I think mom was correct. If we cannot take the responsibility perhaps we have made the wrong choice?
