The South Hadley girls tennis team jumped on Mohawk Trail early and cruised to a 5-0 victory in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament quarterfinal round, Friday at Mount Holyoke College.
In Friday’s Gazette, it was incorrectly reported that South Hadley had beaten Agawam to advance to the semifinals. The Tigers beat the Brownies to close the regular season on May 26.
In Friday’s match, sisters Olivia Blaney and Alexa Blaney posted a clean win over Charlotte Holdeird and Corinne Freeman to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Katie Meon matched that with a sweep at first singles and Tosin Omojola clinched the match with a victory at third singles.
A highlight win came at first doubles to close the match. Aislinn Ford and Hannah Dahrouqe trailed 4-1 in the first set, but rallied to beat Rosalie Kinsey and Emily Seaver 6-4, 6-1.
The Tigers (13-7) will host Lee (14-3) in the semifinals, Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Mount Holyoke.
“At the beginning of the season I had them fill out a form that said what my season goals are and academic goals are,” South Hadley coach Eric Cestero said. “I not only look at athletic goals but their academic goals. If I have a girl that fails, how can I help her. These girls were very motivated and they worked hard.”
