Michael Hixon moved one step closer to the Olympics.
The Amherst native that currently attends Indiana University combined with Sam Dorman to lead the men’s synchronized 3-meter field after Saturday’s semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Indianapolis.
The finals will be Wednesday, and preliminary scores will be combined with both the semifinals and finals to select the team that will go to Rio de Janiero later this summer.
Hixon and Dorman scored 871.53 points.
They lead 2012 bronze medalists Kristain Ipsen and Troy Dumais by 56.52 points.
This is the first time Hixon and Dorman have competed together.
“I’m just excited for the opportunity (to compete in the finals) and hope we can keep it going. We’re trying to relax a little bit. Just try to keep our heads right where they belong. You just have to calm down and take one dive at a time like in practice,” Hixon said in a release.
