At the Summer Bay State Games, the West softball team won its second consecutive gold medal after a 4-2 win over Central, Wednesday in Cambridge.

The win avenged an earlier 18-1 loss to Central. The West team finished 5-1 at the games.

Before the repeat, the West team hadn’t won since 2008.

“It’s a remarkable brand of softball,” West coach Fred Roach said. “I had the opportunity to watch them (Central) play once and make some adjustments.”

Anna Kerwood of Northampton got the win in the circle for the West. She also went 2 for 4 at the plate.

Kerwood won her three starts at the games.

Zoe Driscoll-Sbar, also from Northampton, had two hits in the gold medal game.

Frontier’s Sarah Meunier had an RBI single to give the West team a 3-2 lead in the championship.

Southeast 51, West 43; West 68, Northeast 54 — Hampshire Regional’s Katy O’Connor helped the West girls basketball team open Bay State Games play at 1-1, scoring 27 points in two games.

She dropped 14 in a loss to the Southeast and 13 in a win over the Northeast.

Her high school point guard, Chelsea Moussette, had 12 against the Northeast and hit a 3-pointer against the Southeast.

Katelyn Pickunka, also of Hampshire, scored two points against Northeast.

Mickey Mantle

Northampton 7, Frontier 4 — Sam Shelffo picked up the win for Northampton, giving up four runs and striking out six at home.

Nick Heafey had three runs and three hits for Northampton. Will Jordan chipped in with two hits and two RBIs.

Ben Listkoski had three hits and a run scored for Frontier.

Little League

Amherst 12, Westfield American 7 — Ryan Leonard and Alex Irizarry each hit a two-run home run for Amherst in the 11-12 District 2 tournament win.

Nate Mills earned the win for Amherst, striking out six over four and two thirds innings.

Maxwell Edwards hit a solo home run. Jeremy Torres hit a two-run RBI single and Evan Dooley hit an RBI single for Amherst.

Southampton 7, Agawam 6 (6) — Josh Anders singled and doubled in the 7-9 District 2 Tournament win.

Justin Porter had two singles, and Colton Blanchard collected his first hit of the season.

Carter Corbeil picked up the win, while Robert Herman finished the game pitching and had seven strikeouts.
