UMass alum and former Indiana field hockey coach Amy Robertson will guide the Minutewomen for the 2016 season, according to athletic director Ryan Bamford.
An announcement is expected shortly.
Robertson replaces Carla Tagliente, who left to become the head coach at Princeton last month.
Bamford said Robertson, who lives in North Carolina and runs In the Zone Field Hockey camps, would coach on an interim basis and that UMass would conduct a full search after the season.
Bamford said Robertson wasnโt interested in taking on the position permanently.
Robertson was a standout defender (1984-1987) for UMass and helped lead the Minutewomen to four NCAA Tournaments and the 1987 Final Four. She was an assistant coach at UMass from 1992 to 1996 and helped guide the team to the 1992 Final Four.
Robertson was the head coach at Indiana for the first 15 years of the programโs existence (2000-14). She had a record of 131-141 and led them to two NCAA tournaments. She was the Big Ten coach of the Year in 2003.
Before Indiana, Robertson was an assistant coach at Wake Forest where she helped recruit local standouts Kelly Dostal of Hatfield and Kelly Doton of Greenfield.
IGWENAGU TO THE COLTS โ Former UMass tight end/fullback Emil Igwenagu signed with the Indianapolis Colts Tuesday.
Igwenagu, who was cut by the Detroit Lions in the preseason last year, spent 2012-13 with the Philadelphia Eagles and was on the practice squad for the Lions in 2014.
Heโs appeared in three regular season games.
WILL MANNY TO UTAH โ Utah hasnโt announced that itโs becoming a Division I lacrosse program yet, but there is considerable speculation that the Utes, who are still technically a club program, are making the jump.
Former UMass standout Will Manny, who plays professionally for the Boston Cannons, was named an assistant coach for the Utes last week. Manny had been an assistant at Wagner. Itโs possible, but seems unlikely, that heโd leave a Division I team for a club program.
