Northampton’s run toward a berth to the Cal Ripken World Series came up just short in Uxbridge on Tuesday.

Andy Valley of Maine beat state champion Northampton, 4-3, in the quarterfinal round of the 10-and-under New England Regional Tournament.

Colin Larson hit a two-run home run to tie the game for Northampton in the fourth inning, but Andy Valley answered with the winning run in the fifth.

On the mound, Larson walked two over three innings and gave up a three-run home run in the second inning. James Elliott pitched three innings and took the loss for Northampton. The pair combined to allowed two hits.

Mickey Mantle

Frontier 9, Amherst 2 — Kalen Evans pitched a one-hitter as Frontier opened the Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League’s double-elimination tournament with a win at Ziomek Field.

Evans struck out 10 and walked three over seven innings.

Frontier had eight hits, including four in the top of the third. Kiernan Freeman had two hits and an RBI. Dan Momaney and Xavier Santiago had an RBI single each.

Levi Constant had the lone hit for Amherst, an RBI single in the bottom of the third.

Constant also struck out three and walked three over three innings. Thea Hanscom finished the game with three strikeouts over four innings in relief.

Frontier will visit Dalton, while Amherst will host Mohawk. Both games are at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

South Hadley 2, Easthampton 1 — Sean Doyle (two hits) and Braden Fogarty each had an RBI single in the sixth as South Hadley won its opener in the double-elimination tournament.

Drew Foley added two hits in the win at Booster Field.

Jack O’Connell scored on Eamonn Powers’ RBI triple in the sixth for Easthampton.

South Hadley will play at Northampton at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Easthampton will play the loser between Dalton and Frontier at 1 p.m. Saturday. That game is scheduled for Deerfield Academy.

Correction

Jonathan Peters went 2 for 3 in Northampton’s 12-2 win over Northbridge, Sunday in the 9-and-under state tournament in Hadley.

Peters was misidentified in Monday’s Gazette.
