After a week dominated by heat and the blazing sun, late Thursday and Friday could see rain moving through the Pioneer Valley.

There’s a chance of showers in the area Thursday afternoon and evening, National Weather Service spokesperson Bill Simpson said. More significant is Friday’s rain, which could help counteract months of dry weather.

“Hopefully, it’s a widespread, continuous, much-needed rain,” Simpson said.

The NWS will have a better idea of rainfall chances and amounts as the day goes on, he said, but the likelihood of heavy rainfall Friday is high

“It looks like at least a half-inch, and it could be more,” he said.

By Saturday, the rain is expected to clear up, with more rain possible on Sunday.

The pattern of high temperatures are likely to continue Thursday with a high of 93 forecast for Northampton. Friday’s high temperature is expected to be 78.
