SOUTH DEERFIELD — Rescue workers shut down a section of Conway Road as they responded to a deadly accident between a dump truck and a pickup on that stretch of Route 116 Thursday afternoon.
“My understanding is that there was a fatality,” said State Police Sgt. Tom Ryan, who confirmed the death around 2 p.m., but didn’t have any other details.
One eyewitness, who declined to be identified, said that after hearing two loud bangs, he saw a pickup crushed by a dump truck in what appeared to be a head-on crash.
Deerfield Police confirmed the accident involved a dump truck and a smaller truck. When asked about what happened, police said they could offer no further details.
Town firefighters were called to the accident along with South County EMS, which happened near 164 Conway Road. Rescue workers shut down Route 116 just before the Whately Road turn-off, near the Interstate-91 exit, and South Mill River Road on the other side, immediately after the accident happened about 12:30 and was still being cleaned up around 3 when the state medical examiner’s office was seen leaving the scene.
The accident is under investigation by the State Police Accident Reconstruction Team and Northwest District Attorney’s Office, among other state agencies.
No other information was available from town police, who referred inquiries to the district attorney’s staff, from whom details were not immediately available.
